Conservatories

Trowbridge, Melksham & Surrounding Areas

The most cost-effective way to create extra space in your home is to add on a conservatory.

Made mainly of glazed panels (usually resting on a brick built base) in a timber, uPVC or aluminium frame, a conservatory will flood your living space with light and can be put to many different uses.

Conservatories do not usually need planning permission and building regulations are covered by our membership of FENSA.

At Alan Joy Windows we are expert at installing conservatories. All our conservatories are bespoke and are installed professionally and efficiently, with the minimum of fuss and bother.

A conservatory can add the “wow” factor to your home, besides being a useful extension and will probably increase the value of your property significantly.

The secret of success with a conservatory is to ensure it maintains a comfortable temperature whatever the season or the weather. This can be achieved by carefully choosing the right materials and – if your budget allows – adding central heating or underfloor heating to the space.

When you consult with us about installing a conservatory, we will survey your property and advise you on the best way to ensure your conservatory is thermally efficient.

Using specialist glass for glazing the roof, windows or both in your conservatory can help regulate the temperature and make it easier to maintain your conservatory.

Thermally efficient glass in double-glazed panels filled with an energy efficient gas like argon, for example, will keep the heat in and the cold out.

Tinted glass can reduce the glare of the sun in the height of summer, and self-cleaning glass reacts with sunlight to break down dirt.

Deciding which style of conservatory to choose is a daunting task because there are so many versions available.

Most popular is the Victorian style, with a pitched roof, ornate roof ridge and bay front – a versatile and attractive extension that suits any house. If you prefer something plainer, go for an Edwardian or Georgian style conservatory which is rectangular with a flat front, giving you more space.

Other decisions to be made when planning a conservatory include how many doors and windows you want; what size and type of doors do you need; how many opening windows do you require, and whether you want to add roof vents. You may want to add electrical sockets and lighting. It’s important that the brickwork and finish of your conservatory blends in with not only the house to which it is attached, but also with your garden.

If you decide to add a conservatory to your house, we are happy to talk you through the options and guide you in your choice. Planning is all part of the service we offer because our aim is to construct a conservatory that we and you, our customer, can be proud of.

Give us a call today; the sooner we start talking, the sooner you’ll be enjoying your new conservatory!

New Conservatory Roofs

Trowbridge, Melksham & Surrounding Areas

If you are planning to build a conservatory onto your house, or you need to replace the roof of your existing conservatory, you may find it confusing to decide what type of conservatory roof will best serve the purpose.

We at Alan Joy Windows have installed all sorts of conservatory roofs over the years, and with our experience we can state that there is no “right or wrong” conservatory roof.

The choice of conservatory roof material depends on a variety of factors, including the purpose of the conservatory and your available budget.

If you want a traditional type of conservatory admitting plenty of natural light – a room in which to grow some exotic plants and sit in the sunshine or gaze up at the stars – then a glass roof would be the best choice. Glass remains the most popular choice for conservatory roofs.

Because of the potential for damage, we would recommend using toughened glass, and to make life easier you could consider self-cleaning glass. To avoid the heat of high summer you could opt for tinted glass (or fit the interior with automated blinds).

By contrast in the winter you want your conservatory to be warm, so the glass roof should preferably be double-glazed for thermal efficiency.

For extra thermal effeiciency.

A more affordable alternative to glass is polycarbonate plastic conservatory roofing.

This lightweight material consists of thin sheets of plastic laid on top of one another with reinforcing air pockets in between, resembling a honeycomb.

Polycarbonate is not as thermally efficient as glass. Another disadvantage is that it is not sound-proof, so you’ll definitely hear the pitter-patter of the raindrops striking it. It is, however, very strong, durable and weather resistant.

Polycarbonate conservatory roofing comes in several varieties: clear, opalesce, bronze or opaque. Your choice will depend on how much light and solar transmission you want to allow through.

Free Advice

Discuss your requirements.

If you want a conservatory roof that puts a little more protection between you and the elements you could opt to have a solid roof or a tiled roof conservatory.

Both these roofing systems will make your conservatory feel more like an integral part of your house, rather than an add-on. A solid or tiled roof on the conservatory can be properly insulated and fitted with lighting so that the room can be utilised for any purpose at a comfortable temperature all year round, just like the rest of the house.

Many of our customers with an existing glass or polycarbonate roofed conservatory call us in to convert this to a tiled roof. This is a relatively straightforward procedure, as long as the existing conservatory structure can bear the load of the tiled roof.

Whichever solution you decide on for your conservatory roof, you can rest assured that we use only the best quality materials for roofing your conservatory. Our conservatory installation teams are masters of their craft, who take great pride in their work and are committed to a high standard of customer service.

Tiled Roof Conservatories

Trowbridge, Melksham & Surrounding Areas

One of the most popular home improvements that we at Alan Joy Windows are called in to undertake is adding a solid tiled roof to a conservatory.

Many people find that their conservatories are too hot in the summer, and too cold in winter, meaning they end up being under-utilised as an extension of living space in the home; redundant for a large part of the year.

Others whose properties are overlooked by neighbouring buildings may feel their privacy is compromised by the glass roof of the conservatory. The answer is to replace the glazed roof of your conservatory with an insulated tiled roof that will make your conservatory into a comfortable private space, usable all year round.

It is surprisingly affordable, quick and easy to transform your conservatory into a solid-roofed garden room that is a useful extension to your house – one that will be an integral part of it.

Under a solid roof your conservatory can be used for many purposes, from a living room or study to a games room or sun-room.

If you fear you may be cutting off natural light by replacing the glazed roof with a solid one, you can simply add in some roof windows or skylights.

Optional Skylights

To add natural light whilst keeping privacy.

Our experienced and highly qualified team are able to add a tiled roof to any shape or size of existing conservatory with minimal disruption.

The roof will be tiled to match the rest of your property and will be insulated for energy efficiency.

Inside, the finished roof space can accommodate various types of lighting; recessed LED down lighters are the most popular, but your choice depends on what use the tiled roof conservatory is going to be put to.

When adding a solid roof to an existing conservatory we will take into account the load-bearing capability of the foundations and the vertical frames before advising you on the best sort of roof to suit.

If necessary, we are able to reinforce the frame or might suggest adding new window and door frames to support the weight of the roof.

We will handle the project in consultation with you from the design stage, through to obtaining any necessary planning permission and complying with Building Regulations, and on to our unrivalled “after sales service”.

Over many years we at Alan Joy Windows have developed a reputation in west Wiltshire for excellent workmanship and customer service, whether it be for installing tiled roof conservatories, glazed conservatories, orangeries or replacing windows and doors.
