There are several types of patio doors available:
French Doors
If you have a small opening in which to fit patio doors it may be best to have a set of French doors – two doors hinged on each side of the frame that lock together in the middle.
French doors generally come in standard sizes of 1.2m, 1.5m or 1.8m wide. You can have the doors double-glazed as one large glass panel, or choose smaller panes.
Bear in mind that French doors usually open outwards.
Bi-fold Doors
Bi-fold doors consist of three or more individual glazed panels that fold and slide along a supporting track in a concertina motion, stacking at either end when open.
These doors can cover openings of up to 5m or wider and are extremely popular with contemporary homeowners because when open there is an uninterrupted flow from inside to outside.
Sliding Patio Doors
Ordinary sliding doors are a good solution for wide span openings that are too big for French doors. Sliding patio doors usually feature glass panels that slide sideways along a track to open, stacking at the end of the frame.
It is most important that sliding patio doors are professionally installed, because inaccurate fitting can result in unreliable operation with doors coming adrift of the tracks or not closing and locking correctly.
